Belfast city centre is defined by short blocks, narrow lanes, active ground floors and a strong sense of place. Our approach starts from those qualities and aims to restore this important part of the city centre.
Belfast has a compact city centre that can be crossed on foot in around 15 to 20 minutes. Key destinations such as the Cathedral Quarter, City Hall / Donegall Square, the retail centre and the waterfront all sit close together. That closeness helps streets feel active and connected.
Our aim is to respond to the style and character that already exists, with heritage at the heart of that approach. In practice, that means balancing heritage considerations, appropriate scale and massing, and the creation of a strong sense of place with a high-quality public realm.

This is a unique part of Belfast. It’s where the city began, where its history can be seen in the streets and spaces, and where there is an opportunity for reinvention.
We want to create a place that feels rooted in Belfast, blending heritage with quality, world-class design. That means taking cues from the city’s historic street pattern, its buildings and its views, working with listed buildings and building on the street network to create new walkways which connect the area into the wider city network.
Streets and public spaces will be designed to prioritise walking, providing safe and legible routes that connect to surrounding neighbourhoods. Buildings will be arranged in defined perimeter blocks that reflect Belfast’s traditional street pattern and urban grain.
We are creating a place which is designed for people to be able to live, work, shop and socialise.
