Giving Belfast new and improved streets and public spaces
As part of our vision for North Street/Donegall Street, we want to make it easier to get to and move through the area to the rest of the city centre.
This includes improved pedestrian routes, new lanes and alleyways, better links through the site, clearer views towards St Anne’s Cathedral, and new public spaces designed for people.
We pay homage to the former North Street Arcade by retaining the two listed façades on North St and Donegall St and creating a way through a new covered arcade with active uses at ground level.

A new square for Belfast.
Belfast needs more welcoming public spaces in the city centre. Our proposals include a new square opening onto both Royal Avenue and North Street.
This square would provide a fitting setting for First Church and The Masonic Hall – both listed buildings.
We want this space to feel open and welcoming: easy to access from surrounding streets; well connected to shops, cafés and other activity; and comfortable to use during the day and into the evening.

Reimagining Writer’s Square.
We respect how important Writers’ Square is for Belfast and we have prepared a concept and a series of design principles to guide a consensus on its future form and function, for public sector partners to deliver.
These include:
- A more rectangular form focused on providing a proper setting for the Cathedral
- A space which facilitates views of the Cathedral from Church St and from a new pedestrian street (Long Lane) connecting to North Street and Lower Garfield Street
- Active ground floor uses on two sides of the square – restaurants and bars with park side seating bringing activity and enhancing safety
- Lots more seating on the edges of the square
- More grass than is currently in place to soften the space and make it more appealing to everyone
- Respecting the square as a place to gather and to host cultural and other events
